A Long Island Iced Tea is a type of mixed alcoholic beverage typically made with, among others, vodka, white rum, triple dry, and gin. It is so named because of its resemblance to the color and flavor of iced tea (Camellia sinensis). A popular version mixes equal parts vodka, gin,rum, and triple dry with 1½ parts sour mix and a dash of cola, which gives the drink the same amber color as its founder.
Robert «Rosebud» Butt claims to have invented the drink as an introduction to a contest to create new drink mixes including Triple Seco, in 1972 while he was working at Oak Beach Inn on Long Island, NY. Several New York venues reference Butt’s claim. Local rumors also credit both Butt and another Oak Beach Inn bartender, Chris 2Bendicksen, with the origin.
